Work is underway on a major revamp of Whitehaven harbour - which includes plans to illuminate a popular landmark again.

The Wave has not been lit up for many years but plans are now being put in place to restore the structure back to its former glory.

John Baker, CEO of the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, said they were currently looking to secure funding to light up The Wave again.

He said: "This week we are getting it all cleaned down so it looks smarter than it has done for a while and then we'll look to paint it. Longer term, we want to get the lights back running."

Mr Baker said the festival lighting along the Old Quays, which haven't been used for a few years, would be illuminated during the summer.

"That will enable us to light up the harbour short term," he explained. "Perhaps not as stunning as The Wave and having it all lit up but it's another step on the journey to regeneration."

Work to clean up the Crow's Nest on the harbour has also been done. The outside of the dome has been power washed, while the floor inside has been polished and painted and the seating area has been varnished.

"It's starting to look as though it's new almost," Mr Baker said.

"There's lots being done. The town council and Copeland Council have helped, and the rotary club are coming in to help us again.

"There's lots going on around the harbour so it feels like we're making progress. The bigger projects, like the lighthouse, we're working towards. We are on a journey and we are making progress."

A Facebook campaign was launched earlier this year to save the town’s iconic lighthouses.

It was later taken down after the man behind it, Mark Johnson, met with Mr Baker, and was encouraged by what he had to say.

When asked about progress on improving the lighthouses, Mr Baker replied: "We've got some partnerships in place, which is great. We're looking to start some work on the north pier, if we can, this year.

"We have got some good partnership discussions going on, to enable us to get to that point. We're looking at funding routes to get the west pier done at the same time.

"We've had some really good support from local businesses and local people."

Mr Baker became CEO of the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners in January, taking over from Celia MacKenzie.
