Eden Police stopped a van driving in Shap because they were collecting scrap metal illegally.

After reports from local residents, a white Ford transit van was stopped in the Keld area, said police.

Enquiries were carried out and it was established that the two occupants of the vehicle, both men from County Durham, did not have the appropriate licences, police said. They were interviewed at the roadside and reported.

Cumbria Police said: “Unlicensed scrap metal collectors are a nuisance to local communities and may use it as a front for other illegal activity.

“Scrap collectors should ensure that their valid waste carrier licence is clearly displayed in their vehicle and make sure their licence is valid for each council district that they operate in.

“Cumbria Police and our partner agency Eden District Council will work together to prosecute offenders where necessary.”
