A service from Whitehaven Fire Station aims to keep people in the area safe.

The fire station’s team is reaching out to people to do 'safe and well' visits.

Firefighter Kyle Rotherham said: “What we want is, if people know anyone who could benefit from us visiting them, to ring 08003584777 and quote Whitehaven White Watch.”

The visits involve fire alarm and smoke detector tests and discussing fire escape routes. Fire service personnel will ask members of the public a series of questions on the visits to identify anyone who might be vulnerable. Anyone in need of additional support will be offered it through Cumbria County Council.

Areas surrounding Whitehaven, such as Egremont and Cleator Moor, are included in the checks.

Kyle said: “If they don’t have smoke alarms we can fit them free of charge.

“We want to target more of the elderly and vulnerable.” PPE will be worn in any home visits.
