A FAST food restaurant previously slammed by food hygiene inspectors has been given a new rating after re-inspection.

The Subway counter, in the Shell Lakeland Garage in Abbey Road, was handed a one out of five after a visit by inspectors in February.

The chain is one of three branches in the town, including Dalton Road and Hindpool Retail Park sites, which were both awarded top scores in September 2019 by Barrow Borough Council inspectors.

Subway bosses said the food hygiene rating awarded was low because of an administration point, which they claim has been corrected.

At the time, Subway bosses said they would be seeking a reinspection from the council and any mistakes had been rectified through staff training.

A spokesman said: "All Subway stores in the UK and Ireland are owned and operated by independent franchisees, however, the health and safety of all guests is of paramount importance to Subway.

"The Shell Lakeland Garage store in Barrow received the highest possible food hygiene rating for its compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures and compliance with structural requirements.

"The temporary overall food hygiene rating awarded was low purely because of an administration point. This has been corrected through staff training."

The fast food chain was re-inspected by Barrow Borough Council inspectors on April 21 where it was handed four stars after making a number of improvements.
