Cumbrian midfielder Kyle Dempsey has capped an impressive season at Gillingham by being named the League One club's player of the year.

The Maryport star was given the accolade in the Priestfield club's end of campaign awards.

It marks an eyecatching season for the former Carlisle United man in his first term in Kent.

Dempsey, who captains Steve Evans' side, scored eight goals in 44 appearances for the side that finished 10th in the third tier.

The 25-year-old's form has seen him linked with moves to the Championship.

His move to Gillingham has proved a welcome boost to Dempsey's career after his departure from Fleetwood last year.

The west Cumbrian commented on Twitter about his accolade from Gills fans.

He said: "I've said many times this year the support that I’ve received since I’ve been here has been the best I’ve received. And for the fans to vote for this one, I can’t repay you enough.

"I’ve went week in week out every week to show you how much in means. And I thank every one of you."

Dempsey, who came through Carlisle's academy, was a multiple player of the year at United back in 2015 before moving onto Huddersfield and later joining Fleetwood.

Hull City and Nottingham Forest are among the clubs who have been reportedly keeping tabs on the midfielder.
