THREE people from north Cumbria have appeared before a Carlisle Crown Court judge to face an allegation of aggravated burglary involving a claw hammer.

In the dock for a brief hearing were Diane Sylvia Jardine, 33, of Graham Street, Longtown; Daniel Frank Little, 29, of Fell View, Kirklinton; and Peter William Devers, 18, of Woodlands View, Longtown.

All three entered not guilty pleas to the allegation that they jointly face.

The court heard that the allegation is that on September 13 last year, at Longtown Road, Brampton, the trio entered a dwelling as trespassers and attempted to inflict grievous bodily harm on a man.

At the time of committing the said 'burglary', continues the charge, the defendants were in possession of a weapon, namely a claw hammer.

The charge names the premises involved as those of Jeremy Paterson Vehicle Spares, Claybanks Field, Longtown Road, Brampton.

After hearing the three not guilty pleas, Recorder Richard Archer adjourned the case, setting it down for a trial - expected to last three or four days - which will get underway in the week of September 27.

All three defendants were granted bail until that day.
