A CARLISLE pensioner has been fined after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman.
John Melville Downie, 71, of Lightfoot Drive, Harraby, committed a common assault on a woman on January 6, the city's Rickergate court heard.
He originally denied the offence but then changed his plea a week before his trial was due to go ahead, admitting the offence of common assault by beating.
Magistrates imposed a £54 fine and a £34 victim surcharge. He must also pay costs of £105. His fine was reduced by 10 per cent because of his late guilty plea.
