A song has been written for Cumbria’s marathon man as he edges closer to the finish line of his major fundraising challenge.

Gary McKee, of Cleator Moor, is on day 95 of running 110 marathons in 110 days.

The challenge will surpass his physical endeavour in 2017 when he completed 100 marathons in 100 days.

Musician Ben Barrow has now penned an anthem for the record-breaking runner, to help boost the fundraising total.

Gary said: “It’s superb. 85 per cent of the money goes to the fundraising page. It’s a catchy tune. It’s just to try and raise a bit more money and hopefully that’s what it will do.”

Ben, an actor and musician from Barrow, wrote the song over the bank holiday weekend, after hearing about Gary’s fundraiser from his dad, Martin Lewis, who works at Forth Engineering.

The 22-year-old said: “I heard about Gary’s story. It’s the sort of thing I’ve been doing for people anyway so I thought it would be a good thing to do and help him raise a bit more money.”

Ben, who now lives in London, launched his own business in lockdown, called ‘Said with a Song’. He has been writing personalised songs for people to give as gifts for special occasions.

He added: “Gary said he really loved it and enjoyed listening to it. It’s been really positive. I know people who have worked with Gary and listened to it have said it’s perfect for the occasion and really fitting to have an anthem for him.

“I think it’s been listened to about 700 times since Monday so it’s got a bit of traction.”
