HOSPITALITY venues across Copeland will have been hoping for better weather over the bank holiday weekend.

Following months of lockdown, last weekend was the first three-day weekend since pubs and bars were able to serve alcohol outside.

However, the weather was not on side, with wind and rain sweeping across the county.

At one popular venue in Whitehaven, the poor weather meant that only a few tables could be open, at a time when capacity is already severely reduced.

Amber Sullivan, landlady at the Whittington Cat, said it had been extremely difficult since reopening.

She is hoping that customers return in good numbers once the pub is allowed to serve drinks indoors later this month.

Amber said: "Business was alright this week, but we've only got nine tables outside so we weren't expecting a busy bank holiday.

"It's been a bit pointless reopening, we're not making any money - but it's nice to see everybody again.

"We've got umbrellas over the table with heaters and lights on four tables, so we've always got four fully covered and heated.

"I can't wait for May 17. I'm biased, but I think we're the best pub in Whitehaven!

"At the moment, we're just opening at lunchtime through the week."

Other venues in the area simply shut up shop due to the poor weather, which kept most people at home.

Current restrictions prevent customers from being served indoors.

Indoor hospitality is set to reopen from May 17, according to the Government's road map out of lockdown.

Venues will not have to serve a substantial meal, and there will not be a curfew; however, customers will have to order, eat, and drink while seated, as with the current rules.
