A Cumbrian man who is determined to help save lives after a friend of his took her own life six years ago will be doing a 50-mile non-stop walk over the bank holiday weekend.

Cameron Stewart, 21, will be walking from his hometown in Penrith to Windermere and back to raise greater awareness of young suicide.

Through his walk, Cameron will also be aiming to raise money for suicide prevention charity, PAPYRUS.

"It has been an incredibly tough year and sadly we will all know someone directly or in the community that has taken their own life," said Cameron.

"Suicide is the biggest killer of the under 35s in the UK."

Cameron will be supported along the way by friends and fellow Cumbrian fundraiser Andy Airey, who lost his 29-year-old daughter Sophie to suicide in 2018 and has since been heavily involved with PAPYRUS.

He said: "We lost our beautiful daughter, Sophie, to suicide just before Christmas 2018.

"We were looking for an appropriate charity to support at Soph’s funeral and a friend who works in the charity sector suggested PAPYRUS.

"They were (and are) a perfect fit."We know that there’s nothing that we can do that will bring Sophie back, but our involvement with PAPYRUS has been a great comfort because we know that by raising funds for the charity and helping spread the word about their life-saving work we have been directly involved in saving lives which has ensured other families haven’t suffered the grief & horror we endure."

"Once Cameron contacted me I had no choice other that to offer my help!

"If I was fitter and my knees didn’t have an extra 40 years on Cameron’s I would have walked the whole way with him.

"Since that’s not the case I’m planning to walk the first leg with him on Sunday morning, then rejoin him for the over night stretch and (body willing) accompany him the whole way back into Penrith."

Cameron aims to start his walk at 6am on Sunday morning May 2 in Penrith. His route will cover Askham, Howtown, Patterdale, Troutbeck, Windermere and then straight back to Penrith, arriving on the Monday.

Cameron has become something of a serial campaigner after he recently completed a project that saw him rally the community to raise 3000 cards for NHS staff in North Cumbria.

He added: "I thought it would be good to do a physical challenge and the walk seemed quite appropriate, because being outdoors and exercising does boost well-being.
