Young musicians and tech-savvy teenagers have been showcasing their talents at The Gather.

Upstairs@TheGather in Ennerdale, the Arts Council designated small music venue, has been live streaming music events during lockdown - and more young volunteers are needed to help with the project.

In a recent Radio Cumbria broadcast, Helen Millican interviewed four young people, including Hannah Rumney from Ennerdale, a saxophonist, who had no previous experience with the technology of streaming.

However she volunteered to help at The Gather as it prepared to put on live gigs and then stream music to people's homes.

She became proficient in setting up the performance area with staging, lighting, sound and film equipment and learned how to relay sound and pictures through their dedicated YouTube Channel and out onto the internet.

Hannah, a Keswick School Sixth Form student, is very modest about her achievements as she prepares to go to Cambridge University to study veterinary medicine this autumn.

She told the radio host what an opportunity Great Artists -Small Venue offered her to broaden her musical and technological experience.

Jack McDonagh, who is studying music technology at Carlisle College, volunteers to bring the skills that he learned there to support the new initiative at The Gather.

Nat Dempsey, a 19-year-old singer/songwriter from Asby performed Upstairs@TheGather in February.

Nat attended Keswick School, where he began to play live from the age of 11.

This grew into playing local festivals, pubs, bars and support slots for local bands. He is currently studying popular music at Salford University.

He hopes to release a new single at some point in the future and get back on the gig circuit locally and in Manchester.

Peter Maher, project co-ordinator, said: "All of this exciting music Upstairs@TheGather, especially involving a younger generation, is quickly becoming an international phenomena. Who would have thought that such opportunities would emerge from a small rural village in West Cumbria?"
