Our readers had mixed reviews about whether school uniforms should be scrapped to allow children to have their own individuality.

Some parents thought uniforms were a good things, and others agreed uniforms were good but logos should be scrapped.

A few parents thought uniforms in general should be scrapped.

Amanda Blair said: "No, there is already so much pressure on kids to act a certain way, look a certain way, uniform allows them to all be one. It would be great if we lived in a world where there was no indifference, no bullying, no criticism, but unfortunately we're a long way off from that."

Meg Neild added: "Absolutely not. Would become a fashion show and highlight the children (and their parents!) who can’t afford the top brands. Uniform keeps everyone the same regardless."

Stuart Hoodless commented: "Let the children decide they can decide their gender now so should be fine with clothing."

Laura Storey continued: "No - however what should be scrapped is the schools demanding their logos on the uniform meaning you can only purchase them from specific places which allows those places to charge the earth."

Susan C Beattie explained: "A simple uniform is sensible - it makes life straightforward (relatively anyway).

"However, old fashioned blazers as if it was 1954 and the fuss made about a kids trousers (basically just the girls really) are "too tight" or not is not necessary, nor is the pricey logo-ed clothing."

Jemma Murray added: "Definitely not, it’ll increase bullying, parents will feel the need to buy clothing every week for there children; although I do think schools especially secondary should be less strict with their uniform, my school if you forgot your tie or were wearing shoes that weren’t able to polish you weren’t able to attend lesson."

Andrea Reynolds explained: "No, uniform is a leveller and makes things easier for low income families that can’t afford expensive branded clothes.

"I do definitely think schools have far too much focus on things like hair, makeup, nail polish, jewellery etc though, none of those things affect a child’s ability to learn and if being able express their individuality means they are happier in themselves they will learn more and hopefully do better at school.

"Stripping them of this because of stupid school policies that were developed when the world was a different place just antagonises them and turns school into a place they don’t want to be.

"Most of the rules were made to get students ready for the world of work, but things have changed and workplaces don’t even have these rules themselves now."

Jane Green commented: "Anyone who believes school uniforms bring equity hasn’t set foot in a secondary school for a long time."

Pauline Burke said: "No, uniform is easier, it's school not a fashion contest, they can put uniform out for the morning and know exactly what they have to wear, they can wear what they want out of school."
