A COUNTY councillor who resigned her role after four busy years is focusing on her maths teaching business.

Rebecca Hanson has stood down as the Cockermouth North county councillor, where she sat on the Cumbria Health Scrutiny Committee.

She previously served as a Cockermouth town councillor and a Brigham parish councillor.

“I’m so grateful to the people of Cockermouth who trusted me to be their county councillor.

“I’ve just loved it,” said Rebecca, a former secondary school maths teacher.

“I’m very excited that I’ll have more time to focus on my work with primary maths teachers.

“I recently started freesharing the training I developed with brilliant Cumbria teachers as RebeccaTheMathsLady on YouTube. These videos have already had over 60,000 views and have received superb feedback.”

Rebecca played a key role when the maternity services at Whitehaven’s West Cumberland Hospital were under threat.

She spoke out at public meetings and met with key individuals and the regulator to make sure they all understood the risks.

“I ensured maternity services were discussed at every health scrutiny meeting for two years until the issue was resolved,” she said. “I also helped to nurture (and wrote a book about) the co-production groups which were set up to protect against similar crises in the future.”

She also secured funding for and established a youth mental health network. “I completed more than 300 casework requests. Lots of new dropped kerbs were successfully campaigned for and installed to improve disability access,” she said.
