We’re looking back to 2003 this week. The year when more than 2 million people demonstrated against the Iraq War in London, the largest demonstration in UK history.

Chelsea FC was bought by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for a sum of £150 million. Meanwhile, in rugby England became world champions defeating Australia.

It was a big year for soap opera fans with Channel 4’s Brookside ending after 21 years while 19.4 million viewers watched Coronation Street as Richard Hillman confessed to the murder of Maxine Peacock.

On the music front number ones ranged from The Closest Thing to Crazy by Katie Melua and Are you Ready for Love from Elton John.

And there was good news for partygoers in Carlisle with the opening of Walkabout in Botchergate.
