Following the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh, we are looking back at your recollections of the times he visited our region.

Prince Philip took on some 22,191 solo engagements during his storied life and visited Cumbria on many occasions either alongside Queen Elizabeth II or on his own.

The Duke of Edinburgh accompanied the Queen on a memorable visit to Whitehaven in June 2008.

They were the guests of honour at a special day to mark the 300th anniversary of Whitehaven town and harbour, as well as opening the newly-refurbished Beacon.

Gerard Richardson, was Whitehaven Maritime Festival Company, and remembers the day fondly.

Gerard said on news of the Duke's death: "I'm gutted to be honest, he was just a lovely gentleman. I've met him twice, one at Whitehaven, once at a garden party. Everyone knew he was the Queen's rock and treated him with respect.

"At the harbour we were walking and he saw a police woman kick a bit of rubbish behind her to get it out of the way, he went up to her and said 'that's a fixed penalty I should fine you' she didn't know where to look. He had a very good humour.

"It was a day not many will forget, the whole place was packed."

In 2016, Prince Philip was also given a guided tour of the Sellafield nuclear facility to see first-hand the innovative ways the site's clean-up was being carried out.

Phil Hallington, head of policy at Sellafield Ltd, had the honour of taking the Duke on a guided tour of the site.

He stated following the visit: “Sixty years ago, I was stood with my father, who worked on the site, watching the Queen open Calder Hall, the world's first commercial nuclear power station.

"It was a real honour for everyone at Sellafield Ltd."

Adam Sharp, an apprentice at the time, also met the Duke.

"It was a moment in my career I’ll never forget.”
