FIREFIGHTERS battled a wildfire which broke out in Bowness-on-Solway.

Crews from Carlisle East, and West, Fire Stations, together with teams from Wigton and Silloth got the call yesterday evening.

A spokesman from Carisle East Fire Station said they were contacted at 8.35pm.

The blaze was the approximately 300m in length and had been burning for some time before the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service were alerted.

He said crews were at the field for about an hour and the fire was put out using back packs of water and beaters.

The cause is unknown and under investigation.
