Whitehaven town centre businesses can now access a free permit to assist with loading and unloading stock outside their premises.

Local Councils have introduced a temporary parking relaxation to assist businesses that are planning to reopen from Monday, April 12.

Businesses that do not have designated loading bays will be permitted to allow loading/unloading vehicles to park on-street for a 20-minute period. Firms are invited to apply for the permit from today, and their personalised permit will be delivered next week.

A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council said: “Cumbria County Council is pleased that collaborative partnership working with Copeland Borough Council has developed this scheme.

"We are confident that these parking permits will help to manage the on-street loading provisions and support the commercial recovery of the town.”

Jenny Brumby, Copeland Borough Council’s Shop Local Co-ordinator, said: “We are pleased to be working with Cumbria County Council to introduce this permit. Copeland Council and our Shop Local campaign are proud to support our business community, and we are sure this scheme will be welcomed.”

The operation of the permits will be under regular review but is intended to last for an initial three-month period, after which operation may return to normal. Cumbria County Council could however revisit the Traffic Regulation Order if necessary, whereby the businesses and wider community would be included in any consultation on proposed changes.
