NEWS and Star readers have been reacting to a potential bargain house offered for auction.

A grade-II listed six-bedroom home in Carlisle went under the hammer yesterday with a guide price of just £150,000.

While the property eventually sold for £223,000, many readers had their curiosity piqued by Ashleigh House, on Wood Street.

Posting on Facebook, Annemarie Mccormick said; "It’s been on the market for a while at 259 and nothing.

"Hopefully it will make a nice family home. I wish I could afford it."

Paul Best added: "A lot of house for the money, l reckon it'll go for between two fifty and three hundred thousand."

Others were quick to explain why the guide price was so low - Lorna Meaghan said: "Look at their other "guide prices" and what they actually sell for.

"You'll soon see their guides are just to raise interest in the listing, they mean diddly squat!"

Andrew Scott said: "Which end and how close to Warwick Road? I suspect the reason it’s been listed a while and gone to auction is it’ll be hard to insure the property."

One issue is that windows to the rear elevation have been replaced without listed building consent, meaning the new owner would be responsible for rectifying the issue - something that seemed to irritate Richard Percival!

He wrote: "Once again the stupid practice of “listed building” puts a fly in the ointment!

"Houses should be free to evolve, why should it be anyones concern other than the owners."
