It is long and narrow, about four miles long and 0.75 miles wide, but is also extremely shallow, with a maximum depth of about 70 ft.

At Surprise View you can look out over the whole of the Derwentwater, Keswick, and beyond to Bassenthwaite Lake. Take care with children as there are no barriers and this is the top of a cliff.
