Former Carlisle United star Kyle Dempsey starred again for Gillingham - after being hailed as the best midfielder in League One.

The Cumbrian midfielder scored his eighth of the season for Steve Evans' side in a 3-0 away win against high-flying Lincoln.

It was the latest influential performance by the Maryport man as his fresh start in Kent goes from strength to strength.

The 25-year-old's strike at Sincil Bank followed a goal in the Gills' win at Swindon on Saturday.

Ex-Carlisle youth product Dempsey has consistently earned rave reviews from his manager, who said Gillingham fended off transfer interest in the west Cumbrian in January.

Speaking to Kent Online, Evans said: “Kyle Dempsey has everything in his game - energy, strength, passion, technique and pace.

“He is without doubt, for me, the best central midfield player in League One and he is showing it most weeks.”

Dempsey joined Gillingham in the summer after a spell with Fleetwood, and was immediately appointed captain by Evans. They currently sit ninth in the third tier.

The midfielder recently said he had regained his old confidence since joining the Priestfield outfit.

"One thing that probably been playing on my mind over the last couple of seasons is not being that productive, goal-scoring midfielder, and to get that back probably shows credit to the gaffer to give me that belief again," he said.

“Every time I go into a game I feel like I am going to get a chance to score.”
