Breaking a world record is definitely something worth celebrating, and here in Cumbria we've had quite a few records broken.

Information available on the official Guinness World Record website shows that active record holders walk among us in Cumbria – and some have claimed their title for many years.

We've taken a look through some of the weird and wonderful records that have been broken, right here, in our county.

Farthest distance pushing a wheelchair in 24 hours (team)

The Cumbria Cerebral Palsy Society in Whitehaven broke the record in 200.

A team of 75 volunteers pushed a wheelchair a distance of 386.2 km or 240 miles in 24 hours at Copeland Stadium, Whitehaven on 8 to 9 September 2000.

The event was organised by the Maryport branch of the Cumbria Cerebral Palsy Society.

Oldest person to ride a zip wire

Jack Reynolds was the oldest person to ride a zip wire in 2018.

He took to Go Ape, in Grizedale on his 106th Birthday.

It was his third time achieving a Guinness World Record title in three years.

Oldest topiary garden

This world record was recorded in 2003. The world's oldest topiary garden was recorded at Levens Hall, which has topiary designs that are over 300 years old, with the initial planting and training of them carried out in the 1690s. The shapes include Chess pieces, the Judge's Wig and the Great Umbrellas.

Most Gurning World Championships wins - male

The title was picked up at Egremont Crab Fair in 2012.

The only male gurner to win the world title an amazing 14 times is Tommy Mattinson, whose flexible face took the top prize at the annual Gurning World Championship at Egremont Crab Fair, in 1986 to 87 and then 12 times between 1999 and 2012.

Gurning world championships - female - most wins

In 2010 this award was given at Egremont Crab Fair.

The most gurning world championship female wins is 27 by Anne Woods, achieved at the Egremont Crab Fair in Cumbria, between 1977 and 2010.

Egremont Crab Fair and Sports was established in 1267, which makes it one of the oldest fairs in the world.

It combines ancient and traditional events with modern attractions in a unique way, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Largest shaving cream pie fight

The largest shaving cream pie fight consists of 1,180 participants and was achieved by Another Fine Fest in Ulverston, on 18 June 2016.

Another Fine Fest is an arts and theatre festival held annually to celebrate the town of Ulverston and Stan Laurel, of Laurel and Hardy fame, who was born there.
