Plans to transform an unused section of a Carlisle Golf Club into a caravan park have been submitted to the council.

The application received by Carlisle City Council outlines a vision to change of use of land to facilitate the stationing of up to 100 caravans.

The site comprises an area to the north-east of Eden Golf Course.

Currently an open area of rough cut grass, the proposed site is not in any productive use.

The proposed development is an entirely separate enterprise from Eden Golf Club but owners Alistair and Julie Wannop hope that it will boost the local economy, especially the retail and food and drink sectors in the area.

They said: “The development will be close to two world heritage sites, Hadrian’s Wall and the Lake District. The stunning Solway coast and Eden Valley are also on the doorstep. It should also make for attractive holiday homes for golfers.”

Julie stresses that the proposed development will have no direct impact on playing facilities at the club.

“We are hoping the proposal will be a part of the drive to get this area back on its feet following the economic damage of Covid,” she adds.

The development forms part of a scheme on Eden Golf Course’s behalf to improve the area.

Application documents state their aims are as follows: “Utilise the landscape and planting opportunities to establish a high quality.”

The proposed units would be finished with a timber appearance in order to preserve the appearance of the area and mitigate the impacts of the proposed development.

It is considered that this is the “most appropriate finish” to ensure the units would provide for a “mid-high sector price point”.

Any concerns about the impact the development could have on the surrounding environment could be allayed by support by a Landscape Appraisal which concludes that “the development is appropriate in this location”.
