A person had to be freed from a car after a crash.

Crews from both Carlisle East and West station worked to free the casualty after the collision at about 7pm yesterday on the underpass on West Tower Street.

It involved one vehicle.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Services said: "On arrival crews performed casualty care and gave oxygen to the sole occupant of the vehicle.

"Paramedics were quickly in attendance and working together, after stabilising the casualty, fire crews and paramedics performed a roof removal to enable a spine board to used to extricate the driver.

"Crews were on scene for about an hour and used specialised cutting gear to remove the roof.

"The casualty was taken by ambulance to Cumberland Infirmary for further assessment/treatment."
