IN today’s gallery, we take another trip down memory lane through our archives, back to the year 1984.
It was a momentous year in popular culture with many historic events occurring over the twelve month stretch.
Colonel Joe Kittinger became the first person to complete a solo transatlantic flight in a helium balloon; geneticist Alec Jeffreys discovered DNA fingerprinting in this year and Prince Harry was also born.
In the world of music, superstars such as George Michael with ‘Careless Whisper’ topped the charts, with Phil Collins’ ‘Against All Odds (Take a Look at me Now)’ and ‘The Power of Love’ by Frankie Goes to Hollywood also big hits of the day.
Also in this year, during November of 1984, 44 group members of Band Aid came together to record the single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” in a London studio. The group was created by musician Bob Geldof with the intention of raising money and creating a greater awareness of famine and poverty in Ethiopia and the whole of Africa.
The single became the number one Christmas hit that year and raised millions. Notable participants in the Band Aid recording included Phil Collins, Bono, Sting, Duran Duran, Culture Club, George Michael, David Bowie and Paul McCartney.
In the world sport, the 1984 Summer Olympics, also known as the Games of the XXIII Olympiad, began in July. The games were held in Los Angeles, California.
Domestically, the best gongs that year in football went to Merseyside clubs. Liverpool F.C. secured a third consecutive league title.
Rivals Everton won the FA Cup, with a 2–0 win over Watford in the final at Wembley Stadium.
Closer to home, we see evidence of a historic year.
The famous Melvyn Bragg, of course a native of Carlisle, would venture to the city to film; various fun runs were completed and the Lanes Shopping Centre opened its doors.
We are sure this gallery will bring back happy memories of a historic period.
