Plans for a new waste management site in Barrow are set to be considered by councillors.

JJC Properties Ltd has applied for planning permission to Cumbria County Council for the development of a new facility at the Sandscale Park site, adjacent to the Ørsted heliport and the former PartyLite candle factory.

Councillors are expected to hear the proposals at the next development control committee meeting. The next scheduled one currently is April 8.

The planning application is partially retrospective as some development has already commenced on the site and the application is currently under consideration by the authority.

The documents submitted in the planning application said: “The new building is specifically designed for the purpose and has a high roof and no intermediate support columns to allow vehicles to manoeuvre and tip their loads and waste handling machinery, in order to operate safely.

“There would be a number of bays in the yard area for storing material such as soil and rubble and scrap metal, although it is not proposed to handle scrap motor vehicles.

“The business plans to sort and separates materials for recycling using a conveyor system. Plastic, card, and paper will be sorted and baled inside the new building.”

The applicant states that an existing fleet of lorries will operate from the site and empty skips will be stored there.
