We may be biased, but we think Cumbria is a great place to live.

There are a variety of properties in the county that suit all preferences and budgets.

According to Zoopla, the average price paid for a house in Cumbria is £189,786; of course, you can also get bargain properties which are much more affordable than this.

We all know just how expensive it can be to live and buy a house in London- but have you ever really stopped to think about the figures and how Cumbria’s property prices compare to London’s?

Using data from Zoopla, we can compare house and flat prices to see just how big the price gap is between London and our humble county.

This is what we found (information and figures correct at the time of publication):

House prices

According to Zoopla, the average price paid for a house in London is £699,812- which is a whopping 268 per cent higher than the average price paid in Cumbria.

For £189,000 (the average price paid for a house in the last 12 months) in Cumbria, you can get a three bedroom home.

This one is currently on the market for £189,950 and is situated in Dalton.

Opposingly, £189,000 is unlikely to get you far in London.

In fact, for a little over this price you could pay for a parking spot in the capital.

As expected, detached houses are the most expensive type of property to buy in both London and Cumbria.

According to figures from the last 12 months, the average price paid for a detached house in Cumbria is £292,322.

If you think this figure is high, you should see London’s as it appears only millionaires can afford a detached house in this city.

The average price paid for a detached home in London an eye-watering £1,119, 633.

While this figure is incredibly high, the value of a detached house in London more than half a million pounds more than average price paid.

Opposingly, the average current value of a house in Cumbria is more than £2000 lower than the price paid.

Flat prices

In Cumbria, the average current value of a flat is much higher than the value of a terraced house- 38 per cent higher to be exact.

Also, flat value far exceeds the average price paid for one in the last 12 months (by £23, 262).

However, this isn’t the case in London.

Flats are the least valuable type of property to own and they are also the cheapest to buy.

However, this doesn’t mean they are any more affordable for the average person.

The average price paid for a London flat in the last 12 months was £521,757- which is a whopping 252 per cent higher than the price paid in Cumbria.

Rental prices

Renting is a great option if you don’t want to commit to a house or cough up your savings for a hefty deposit- but how do Cumbria’s rental prices compare to London’s?

In Cumbria, the average rental price for a house or flat is £649 per month.

This is reasonable in comparison to London’s jaw-dropping £2,603 per month.

In Cumbria, it’s more expensive to rent a three bed flat (£1,399 per month) than it is to rent a three bed house (£718 per month).

The same goes for London- to rent a three bedroom flat it will cost £4,001 per month compared to £3088 for a house.

The most expensive streets and areas

We have already written about some of the most expensive streets and areas in Carlisle.

According to Zoopla, Plains Road in Wetheral is the most expensive street in the city.

The average price for property in Plains Road stood at £571,622 in February 2021.

While this is an impressive figure, it is is nothing compared to the highest value town in London.

Kingston upon Thames has a whopping average property value of £3,051,963.

Did any of these figures and comparisons shock you?
