RESIDENTS have once again been left worried about their properties as Keswick was battered with persistent rain.

As the rain poured down over the weekend, a flood warning was put in place, and the continuing rain added to their worries.

In the past few days, the water had risen to worrying levels with resident Claire Peat saying: “We’re slightly below-ground level that flooded in Storm Desmond with water rising up from the water table, but that was fine last night and this morning.

“This little gap is hopefully enough of a break to keep us safe. The power’s now back on, we can only hope the rain doesn’t come down too hard.”

There was 112mm of water that fell on Honnister.

Stewart Mounsey, area flood risk manger for Cumbria, said: “Most of the rivers have peaked and we have lighter rain which means the rivers can continue to go down. during the next few days we have dry weather.

“So far we’ve had no reports of homes being flooded, but sometimes these can take a few day to come through. These events do worry communities. It is difficult to predict the situations, but Keswick was our main focus and I want to say thank you to Keswick Flood Action Group for its support and fast action.

“We’re a fair distance from Storm Desmond levels and dry weather that is due will help dry up the standing water. We do also have a Covid-secure evacuation plan in place should we need to.”
