Carlisle City Council is planning an exciting addition to their ‘Discover Carlisle’ website.
From next month, the website will be introducing virtual history tours.
Several virtual tours are planned for March, April, May and June.
At discovercarlisle.co.uk, a website which describes the history of Carlisle, and showcases all that the city has to offer, locals and visitors alike will be able to enjoy a tour of the historic location.
The site advises that tours will be available “from the impregnable Castle to the imposing Citadel, this virtual tour of Carlisle uncovers 2000 years of history.”
They say: “This great frontier city close to the border with Scotland has always been a target for conquest.
“Two Roman forts, along with Hadrian’s Wall, helped secure the northern limit of the mighty Roman Empire.
“A thousand years later, the Norman castle kept attackers at bay, whilst the city’s close proximity to Scotland has kept Carlisle on its guard for centuries (and perhaps still does).”
Virtual tours will cost £6 and will take place on:
Wednesday March 10 2021
Thursday April 8 2021
Thursday May 6 2021
Thursday June 3 2021
All virtual tours will begin at 7pm and will last for one hour.

Also on the discovercarlisle.co.uk site there are ‘discover Carlisle guides’ which inform residents and visitors about subjects including the Carlisle to Settle railway, the State Management Scheme, Hadrian’s Wall and Roman Carlisle.
One of the apps also available there is the ‘England’s Historic Cities App’ - an innovative augmented reality (AR) product that brings heritage to life. In Carlisle, the AR experience takes the user back to the Roman Cavalry occupation of the city and visitors can look at artefacts in Tullie House Museum’s Roman Gallery.
