The A596 is currently closed in both directions at Micklethwaite following a serious two-vehicle crash.
Emergency service were called to this scene this morning at about 8.40am.
Cumbria Police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue along with North West Ambulance Service are at the scene.
A woman has been airlifted to hospital with "serious head injuries."
A spokesman for NWAS: "A woman in 30s was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries."
People are asked to avoid the scene and motorists advised to seek alternative routes.
Road closures are in place at Kirkbride and Thursby roundabout.

A spokesman for Cumbria Roads Police said: "A596 near Parton currently closed for investigation after serious RTC. Will update when open."
