A LONGTOWN woman has been given a conditional discharge after she pleaded guilty to benefit fraud.

Diane Sylvia Jardine, 32, of Graham Street, admitted the offence when she appeared at Carlisle's Rickergate court.

The charge stated that between February 29, 2016, and July 1, 2018, she dishonestly failed to notify the Department for Work and Pensions that she had experienced a change of circumstances that she knew would affect her entitlement to carers allowance.

The change was that she was earning over the permitted limit for those who claim the benefit.

She had originally denied the offence but changed her plea to guilty.

After hearing details of the offence, magistrates imposed a one year conditional discharge, along with prosecution costs of £120 and a £20 victim surcharge. Defendants are usually required to repay the amount overpaid, which was not recorded in court records.
