Police have thanked motorists after they reported a driver travelling the wrong way on the M6.

Officers were called at 9.54am today to a report of highway disruption on the M6, near Tebay.

A BMW 1 series was travelling south in the third lane of the Northbound carriageway. Speed restrictions were temporarily in place between junctions 38 and 39 but traffic is now moving as normal.

A spokesman for Cumbria roads police said: "Thanks to those calling us about a vehicle travelling wrong way on the M6 this morning. Driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol and stated he was just following his satnav."
