Graeme Souness has revealed he is a big fan of Dean Henderson - and says it's only a matter of time before the Cumbrian is Manchester United's regular No1.

The midfield legend and Sky Sports pundit says he likes Henderson's ultra-confident personality.

And he believes Whitehaven-born Henderson will eventually claim the first-choice position at Old Trafford as David de Gea comes under further scrutiny.

Speaking on Sky, Souness said: "I think he [Henderson] is a big personality, I think he’s full of himself, which I love.

"Jose Mourinho works with us, and told us that he [Henderson] feels he should’ve been in the team a couple of years ago.

"I love that about a player, if they’re full of themselves - then, great, as long as they can back it up.

"I’m a fan of Henderson," he added. "I think it’s only a matter of time."

Souness said 23-year-old Henderson's quality is reflected in how his departure from Sheffield United, where he impressed on loan in his first top-flight season last term, has affected the struggling Blades.

"If you look at Sheffield United's plight, I think he’s the single biggest reason they are where they are," the Scot said.

"If you look at Man United, de Gea is making mistakes, and as a manager, you can only tolerate that for so long because if he’s making mistakes then that impacts on the whole team.

"You can bet there’s rumblings about de Gea from outfield players, guaranteed."

Former Carlisle United academy keeper Henderson has made 11 first-team appearances this season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side as well as winning a first England cap.

The Blues stand to benefit from certain clauses in the deal which took the keeper to Old Trafford back in 2011, depending on his first-team progress at the Premier League club.
