A FIRE that gutted a garage in Workington was prevented from destroying the entire house by a fast-acting fire crew.
Firefighters were called to action on Sunday night after reports of a house fire.
At 7.30pm four engines attended a blaze at Brierydale Lane, Stainburn, Workington.
Two crews from Workington, and a crew from Maryport and Cockermouth all attended to extinguish the fire.
On arrival, a fire was well alight at the property’s garage and was in danger of spreading to the house.
The home owners alerted the fire service and were able to get out of the property on their own prior to any of the fire crews attending.
Fortunately, there were no casualties in the fire, which has completely devastated the garage at the property.
Nine sets of breathing apparatus and four hose reel jets were deployed to put out the blaze, along with two extension ladders.
Firefighters were at the scene for three hours to fight the fire.
The first crew at the scene, from Workington, ensured that the fire was contained in the garage.
Workington station manager Martin Slack, who was at the scene on Sunday night, said: “It was a fire that was started in a garage of a semi-detached property. It was confined to the garage by the initial crew, which was amazing as they stopped it spreading further.”
It is thought that the cause of the fire was electrical.
Martin added: “We think it was electrical.”
The owners of the property declined to comment.
Mr Slack reminded the public to: “just make sure all electrics are installed by competent people” and said that the crew went to the area today and gave out advice to people including information on smoke alarms.
A free home safety visit is available so that families will know how to react if there is a fire.
