HEXHAM East remains one of the worst-affected wards in Northumberland in terms of coronavirus cases - but cases across the Tyne Valley have continued to fall.

The ward is the second worst-affected ward in the county, but the 48 cases of the virus confirmed in the week ending January 23 is down on yesterday's figure of 51.

Northumberland's overall infection rate has also fallen, with 743 cases confirmed across the county in the last seven days, an infection rate of 232 cases per 100,000 residents.

According to Public Health England, there have now been 14,414 confirmed cases of coronavirus across Northumberland since the start of the pandemic.

NHS England's latest data showed no new deaths from COVID-19 were confirmed at Northumbria Healthcare hospitals yesterday - the death toll remains at 523.

Nationally, the deaths of a further 610 people within 28 days of contracting coronavirus were confirmed yesterday, bringing the total death toll to 97,939. An additional 30,004 people tested positive for the virus, bringing the total death toll to 3,647,463.
