FEARS for the future of Hexham's high street have worsened with the news that another long-established retailer is set to leave the town.

Closing down signs have gone up at Hexham's Fat Face store on Market Place, following the loss of Poundland last week.

Argos and the Edinburgh Woollen Mill also shut for good earlier in the pandemic.

Hexham Courant readers have been reacting to the news on social media, with many fearing for the future of the town's high street.

Julie Hanning wrote: "Loved that shop and the staff were lovely, so sorry for the situation they and many others are now in. Would like to continue to shop local when the pandemic is over but I'm wondering what shops will be left.

Chris Barker added: "By the end of the pandemic there will be no point in going to Hexham," and Stephanie Hart said: "Be nothing left if they carry on like this...Hexham used to be thriving!"

Other comments made suggestions to save other shops in the future.

Anstice Coe said: " Hexham is going down hill rapidly. They need to get the rent rights. How are people who live in around the areas of Hexham able to shop there when shops are closing down?"

Aly Hall added: "The town centre is dying due to excessive business rates, no LA investment or foresight into renewal. Things need to change now before it’s too late," and Maughan Nicholson wrote: "Said it loads, the high street will be a try on only for online shopping. Business rates killing shops. Buy now while shops last!"
