SIX more deaths from coronavirus have been confirmed at Northumbria Healthcare hospitals in the last 24 hours.

Figures from NHS England revealed that the COVID-19 death toll at the trust's hospitals now stands at 516, up from 510 yesterday.

It means 27 people have now died at the trust's hospitals after contracting the virus in the past seven days.

As of January 19, 163 patients were being treated at Northumbria's hospitals, with 29 patients admitted on January 17 alone. Of those people, 14 are currently on ventilation.

Hexham and Prudhoe have both seen a large number of cases confirmed in the past week, according to Northumberland County Council.

Hexham East remained the worst affected council ward in Northumberland, with 47 cases confirmed in the week ending January 20. A total of 78 cases were confirmed across the town's three wards, while Prudhoe saw 47 across its two wards.

816 people tested positive for the virus between January 14 and January 20, an infection rate of 254.8.

According to Public Health England, 14,226 people have now tested positive for COVID-19 in Northumberland since the start of the pandemic.

Nationally, the UK death toll of people who died within 28 days of a positive test increased by 1,401 to 95,981.

A further 40,261 cases of coronavirus were confirmed across the country yesterday. A total of 3,583,907 people have now tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic.
