MORE Covid-19 deaths have been reported by the NHS trust that runs north Cumbria's two main hospitals.

According to the latest Government figures, there have now been 338 fatalities reported by bosses at The Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and Whitehaven's West Cumberland Hospital

Nineteen of those were reported in the seven day up to yesterday - and 63 since January 1.

The worst recent day for deaths was January 16, when seven were reported by the trust.

Officials at the trust involved - North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust - confirmed yesterday that the hospitals continue to be under extreme pressure, with around 300 covid patients being cared for across its two sites.

At the trust which runs Furness General Hospital in Barrow, which also runs a major hospital in Lancaster, there have been 449 deaths reported since the pandemic began.

Experts say the current surge in admissions is partly down to the Christmas easing of restrictions and the increased virulence of the new coronavirus variant.
