INDUSTRY experts have shared their top tips for keeping warm whilst cutting costs in the home as part of a campaign.

The Big Energy Saving Winter, organised by Citizens Advice, runs up to the end of January .

Advice to Cumbrians for reducing their energy consumption - and costs - includes:

- Remembering to regularly adjust heating timers to ensure the house only warms up when necessary and that only rooms in regular use are heated.

- Installing a more-advanced heating system, enabling different temperatures to be set for each room throughout the day. Some systems can even learn a person's habits to automatically adjust heat. Heating can also be controlled - and turned off - remotely.

- Bleeding radiators regularly, particularly if they are not warming up as quickly as they usually do. This will ensure they are working at maximum efficiency.

- Regularly maintaining boilers to ensure they are working efficiently. OFTEC, which represents the liquid fuel heating industry, recommends having a boiler serviced at least once a year.

- Installing a modern, condensing boiler. These are typically smaller, quieter and more efficient.

Malcolm Farrow, of OFTEC, stressed that reducing energy usage was 'incredibly important' for the planet and that it could reduce fuel bills.
