A West Cumbrian theatre is delighted to have been selected to partner a new digital production of Oscar Wilde’s classic, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Theatre By The Lake, at Keswick, have been selected by the producers as a partner theatre to bring Henry Filloux-Bennett and Tamara Harvey’s contemporary reimagining of the Oscar Wilde classic, The Picture of Dorian Gray to theatre audiences digitally across Cumbria from March 16 to 31.

Fionn Whitehad, star of film Dunkirk, takes on the title role of Dorian Gray.

Written by Henry Filloux-Bennett and directed by Tamara Harvey, the show is co-produced by the Barn Theatre, Lawrence Batley Theatre, New Wolsey Theatre, Theatr Clwyd and Oxford Playhouse.

The creative team were behind the celebrated production of What a Carve Up! which pushed the theatrical form in new and innovative ways, garnering high profile critical and public acclaim.

Set in a profile pic-obsessed, filter-fixated world where online and reality blur, influencer Dorian Gray makes a deal for his social star never to fade. As his mental health starts to decline, corruption and murderous depravity start to creep into his world, and the true and horrific cost of his deal will soon need to be met.

Henry Filloux-Bennett and Tamara Harvey said: “So many of us have found ourselves living in an ever more online world over the last year. But the benefits and the connections digital have offered us come with a darker side - deterioration in mental health, isolation, online manipulation to name just a few. We really wanted to explore what would happen if you brought Oscar Wilde’s Faustian tale kicking and screaming into a world of Instagram, Facebook and dating apps.”

Theatre by the Lake will receive 25 per cent of the net sales via its website.

Tickets can be purchased from the theatre’s website at £12 which will include both a link to the production as well as a digital programme. Audio description and closed captioning will be made available for the production.

Box Office sales and support is currently unavailable by phone due to the lockdown, however customers who would like support with their booking can contact the team via email to arrange a call back by emailing enquiries@theatrebythelake.com
