A CONTROLLING boyfriend subjected his partner to an attack so serious that she sustained multiple facial fractures which needed surgery to repair the damage.

Carlisle Crown Court heard that Trevor Lockwood's victim was found by a family member and neighbours slumped against a washing machine and covered in blood in the kitchen of her Flimby home. Broken crockery was strewn about the room.

The woman told the neighbours who helped her the defendant punched her "multiple times".

She later had metal plates implanted in her face to repair the damage.

Lockwood, 40, of Sheila Fell Close, Aspatria, admitted wounding her, inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The court heard that Lockwood had lived with the woman in Flimby for about a year.

"She describes him as controlling and jealous," said Jacob Dyer, prosecuting.

The day before the attack, said the barrister, the couple had fallen out following a road accident which led to a relative being injured.

After her hospital treatment, the victim - for a time forced to drink through a straw because of her injuries - was unable to remember the attack but she made a moving statement about its impact.

"I continue not to sleep," she said.

"I'm a nervous wreck and constantly breaking down and crying about what happened to me. I can't leave the house due to fear and how scared I am.

"The pain in my face was horrific... He needs to be appropriately sentenced because this can't happen again. His violent outburst has ruined my life. I don't want this to happen to another innocent female."

Anthony Parkinson, for Lockwood, said the defendant was "ashamed and disgusted" with his behaviour.

Recorder Eric Lamb noted that there were "multiple aggravating features" to the case. He jailed Lockwood for two years and imposed a restraining order, banning the defendant from having any contact with his victim for five years.

The judge also banned him from entering Flimby or going within 50 yards of any place where the woman works.
