PASSENGERS have been warned that rail services between Maryport and Carlisle have been been cancelled because of flooding.

Northern Rail made the announcement early this morning with disruption expected to last until 7pm this evening.

Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Maryport and Carlisle all lines are blocked.

A spokesman for the rail operator said: "Due to heavy rainfall on numerous parts of the railway services are currently unable to run between Carlisle and Maryport in both directions.

"The latest photos from Network Rail show the railway completely submerged.

"Roads in the area are also reported to be deteriorating.

"Customers are advised do not travel.

"Road transport will not be provided in lieu of the cancelled trains between Maryport and Carlisle."
