JANUARY often means we’re making New Year’s resolutions, but this year it’s a little different.

The most common resolution is to get healthy. Unfortunately, gyms are currently closed and we’re under significant restrictions on leaving home. Many parents are also balancing working from home with home schooling, which brings its own challenges.

So what can you do to get fit and healthy in 2021?

Joe Wicks home workout is another good way to start the day, particularly as part of a home schooling routine. With so many of us working from home, this allows the whole family to take part. For added socialising you can always include the grandparents via a Zoom call.

Yoga and dancing are other great ways to exercise at home. You can find some great online classes for yoga, many of which offer a free taster session to see if it works for you. Dancing can even be a whole family activity and there are even some console games to keep the little ones interested.

It’s also very important to look after your mental health during this time, and mindfulness can be used as a form of exercise. There’s a number of apps available, as well as videos online to help you get started.

If exercising outdoors, you should, where possible, avoid congested or crowded areas and give space to those around you on narrow paths.

Other things you may wish to consider:

• Order your prescriptions in advance. You can combine collecting your medication with any other shopping you need to do, and therefore limit the time you need to be outside.

• Keep your medicine cabinet well-stocked. Common winter ailments are still prevalent at this time and keeping a good stock of paracetamol, ibuprofen and a good first aid kit is advisable.

• As we spend more time at home, we will be using more energy. Look at winter fuel payments and other help that is available to help ensure you can stay warm.

• Take time out to reconnect with others by telephone or, if you have access, using virtual platforms such as Zoom. Your mental health can really suffer during winter months, in particular during this period where socialising isn’t as easily possible. Isolation can lead to problems, so take advantage of the tools which are available.

• We may not have had the usual festive period in 2020 and many of us will be struggling with typical New Year’s resolutions, Dry January is a great opportunity to focus on your health whilst at home.
