Storm Christoph will bring heavy rain, snow and strong winds, the Met Office has warned.

Persistent heavy rain will lead to significant accumulations of rain which could lead to flooding in some areas.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for all of Cumbria. The warning came into force at midnight yesterday and is expected to last until 12pm on Thursday.

A second weather warning will skim Cumbria – with the possibility of snow this week. A yellow weather warning for snow has also been issued by the Met Office, hitting southern Scotland from today.

While not directly covering the county, north Cumbria could see a dusting as the warning skirts Carlisle.

Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong, said “Storm Christoph will bring a mix of notable weather hazards across the UK over the next few days. Some locations in central Northern England and Wales could see a month’s rain fall in just a couple of days, with up to 200mm possible over higher ground."

Engineers from Electricity North West are ramping up preparations ahead of Storm Christoph.

As key workers, engineers for the power network operator are putting plans in place to monitor the network and ensure supplies and teams are available to respond if any electricity substations are affected by flooding.

Sam Loukes, Electricity North West’s incident manager, said: “We’re going to be as prepared as ever for Storm Christoph."
