Network Rail has responded to calls for a barrow crossing to be openly accessed at Ulverston Station.

Concerns have been raised by Furness Line Action Group (FLAG) member Robert Parker who believes the public should have free access to the crossing.

The crossing must be booked in advance and can only be used to cross the railway line when accompanied by a member of staff.

Network Rail spokesperson said: “Pedestrians crossing a live railway line is unsafe and barrow crossings are being phased out across the network because they are too dangerous.

“We’re drawing up designs exploring ways accessibility at Ulverston station can be transformed for passengers. These plans are the next step in bidding for future funding for lifts to be installed as part of the Department for Transport’s ‘Access for All’ scheme.”
