A CARLISLE man who attacked two women in the space of a few weeks has been jailed.

Cyril Greer, 38, whose criminal record consists of 124 previous offences that include serious violence - left one victim with a suspected rib fracture, the city's crown court heard.

The defendant, of Dalton Avenue, Raffles, Carlisle, admitted criminal damage, common assault, and an assault causing actual bodily harm.

Julian Goode, prosecuting, said the first attack happened on August 13 last year. The victim was the defendant's former partner.

The pair had been drinking late into the evening of August 9 and into the next morning.

During an argument, the woman told Greer he was "being pathetic", and he then left.

Ten minutes later, Greer used his head to smash through a kitchen window. He also smashed the woman's front window. At 10.45pm on August 13, the defendant returned to the woman's house.

Having ended their relationship, she was at the house to do some "tidying up."

But the defendant, drunk and angry, subjected her to a "sustained assault", which included repeated punches to her head, which knocked her over.

As she lay on the ground, he repeatedly kicked her body and head.

When leaving, he poured a bowl of cereal over her head.

The second assault against another woman - causing her actual bodily harm - happened on August 24. He called the victim "a grass" and then punched her in the face.

Greer followed this with a "back-handed" slap, bursting her lip. After dragging her by the hair to a sofa, he again began punching her - this time in the stomach.

She eventually ran off as they were leaving the house.

At The Cumberland Infirmary, doctors said she had suffered a suspected rib fracture.

In 2017, the defendant was convicted of another assault causing actual bodily harm and jailed for 21 months.

Mark Shepherd, for Greer, said he was currently spending 23.5 hours a day in his cell due to the pandemic.

"He knows he needs to make significant changes to his life," said Mr Shepherd.

Recorder Eric Lamb jailed Greer for 44 weeks.
