A CARLISLE Crown Court jury has cleared an Eden Valley pensioner of eight allegations of sexually abusing a boy over several years in the 1970s.

But Ronald Parker-Smith, 73, was given a suspended 18 month jail term because he had earlier admitted a single count of indecent assault on the same child. It happened between 1970 and 1971.

The pensioner, of Eamont Bridge, near Penrith, said to be “an isolated figure”, will be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.

As he passed sentence, the judge told the defendant: “It was a nasty offence... But I don’t consider you’re now a risk to young boys.”
