Escaping to the Cumbrian countryside is a dream for many – but for one group, it's keeping it in tip-top shape is the goal.

Members of Fix the Fells are happy to carry out their vital work without spotlights, praise and thanks, but when the opportunity arises to highlight the importance of respecting their beloved landscape, they don their best boots and jump in front of the camera.

Which was entirely the case for programme manager Joanne Backshall and ranger Joe Bagnall, who were delighted to be featured on the popular BBC One show, Escape to the Country, on Tuesday (January 12).

"We filmed it back in August and walked for an hour up Dovedale, so we were boiling!" Joanne said, laughing.

"It was great fun though, and it's always lovely when we get the opportunity to show people the work we do.

"The couple on the programme enjoyed walking and wanted to give back to the Lake District, so Escape to the Country thought Fix the Fells would be perfect to feature, which was really nice."

On the scorching summer day, Joanne and Joe met couple Ammi and Shiv, who were looking to move to Cumbria from Newcastle.

Their search took them to Uldale, Shap and Frizington – and of course Ullswater, to meet the hard working Fix the Fell members.

Joe, from Keswick, demonstrated what the team members get up to when repairing the paths, lifting heavy rocks and slotting them into the eroding gulley, allowing countless more visitors to enjoy the stunning scenery while hiking on the safe path.

Penrith woman Joanne said: "We're always keen to tell people what we do, because so many people love visiting the Lake District, and the paths are so busy that they do erode, and if nothing was done about it, those erosions would be enormous, so the work Fix the Fells does is so important.

"People think the countryside is free, but with 20 million people coming to the Lake District, it takes its toll and requires a lot of work for us."

She continued: "Donations are always greatly appreciated, and we're always more than happy to talk about what we do and welcome new members."
