FOR the first time in weeks, the Haltwhistle ward is not the worst-affected ward in Northumberland for coronavirus cases.

In the week ending January 12, it had fallen to second place behind Hexham Central with Acomb, while cases across the district have fallen dramatically.

It comes after the latest figures revealed that the rate of coronavirus has fallen across the North East, apart from in Newcastle and North Tyneside.

According to Public Health England, there have now been 13,179 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Northumberland since the start of the pandemic.

NHS England's figures showed that no new deaths from the virus were confirmed at Northumbria Healthcare hospitals yesterday. The death toll remains at 483.

As of Tuesday, January 12, 122 patients were being treated at the trust's hospitals for coronavirus, with 17 patients on ventilation beds. 

Nationally, an additional 48,682 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed across the UK yesterday. The total number of cases confirmed since the start of the pandemic now stands at 3,260,258.

An additional 1,248 people died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus yesterday, bringing the total death toll to 86,015.
