One woman is doing her bit to help everyone in Cumbria and beyond to become their own sustainable stylist.

Maggi Toner-Edgar has always appreciated the importance of being responsible when buying new clothes, avoiding "fast fashion” stores and heading instead to charity shops and vintage stores.

After her Cockermouth home was flooded in 2009, it forced her and her daughter Kitty to flee with just a few items of clothing – which had to last them for an unknown length of time.

“The river had burst its banks and I immediately burst into tears, as I realised the implications,” Maggi said.

“In 10 minutes, I packed a bag of clothes to cover all events for the next possible few months of my life.

“I realised that day – no one needed more than 14 items to get through most events. I left my job and began working as stylist, combining my idea of slow fashion with my love of the environment.”

The former Fashion Degree Programme course leader has since developed her business, and turned to the virtual world when the first national lockdown hit, creating her own programme to help others become more sustainable in their fashion.

With Maggi’s online Sustainable Stylist Challenge, budding fashionistas can learn how to customise, repair and alter clothing – as well as learn other top tips from the environment-lover.

But be quick, as the deadline to take part closes on Sunday.
