The artistic talents of a Cumbrian community were put to the test recently as part of a competition.

McCarthy and Stone, which has a residential living property in Cockermouth, held a competition to capture the best views of the town.

Ian Downes, 68, was named winner of the competition with his photo ‘Where the River Cocker meets the River Derwent’.

He said: “This is the first time I have ever entered a photographic competition. I am thrilled to have won.

“My wife Janet is very patient of my hobby, but has frequently lamented that I take more pictures of scenes and views than I do of people, so I think I’ll definitely look to treat her with some of the winnings.”

Photography has been a longtime hobby for Mr Downes, but this particular photo had a special meaning to him as it was inspired by his mother.

They used to sit for a moment overlooking the river.

As well as being named as winner of the competition, he also won £500.

His photo is now on display in the show apartment at Lancaster House in Cockermouth.

“I read about the competition in the paper. I had time on my hands and unusually decided to enter,” he said.

“Covid has meant that my wife and I are actually spending less time outside as we both have elderly mothers who rely upon us, mine 94 and Janet’s 99.”

Julie Laidlow, mayor of Cockermouth, said: “There were so many fantastic entries as of course we are spoilt for choice for views in Cockermouth. It was hard to pick just one.

“Ian’s photo of the confluence caught my eye initially – the sun was shining and it looked like such a bright, crisp day.

“The trickle of the river and the delightful backdrop makes you feel like you’re there.

“The best photographs do just that and I know that Ian’s photograph will be admired by all who visit Lancaster Court.”
